Clarks Thread Mills, closely followed by J & P Coats established Paisley as the world leader in cotton thread production in the early 19th Century, just as the infamous Paisley Shawl manfacturing was begining to decline. The modern Coats Group Plc which incorportates the Clark Mills along with almost all of the other Paisley thread companies is still a world leading company.
